President’s Update

1. Connecticut Atlantic Salmon Legacy Program – Update – Shetucket River Stocked!

Due to the drought and low water conditions in the Naugatuck and Shetucket Rivers, the first stocking in early October of Connecticut Broodstock Atlantic Salmon was once again shifted to lakes this year. However, the State DEEP found the conditions in the Shetucket River improved enough to proceed with the second stocking Tuesday 10/18/16 of 2+ year old non spawned salmon. The Naugatuck River remains under observation and was not stocked.

So, there IS Salmon fishing in Connecticut!  Get out and swing some flies and please remember to check the regulations – “Catch and Release” only this time of year.

2. Connecticut Legislative – Update – Trout Stamp and Budget.

The  Legislature passed the Trout Stamp Bill and the Governor signed it. It is now on the books with the Salmon Stamp. The DEEP is looking at options for the stamps. If something should develop,  the next steps would be for a proposal and public meetings to discuss it.

The Governor requested another round of 10% reductions from all Departments for the next budget. Since, the DEEP has done such a masterful job of using retirements and reorganization of duties within the department to avoid layoffs during the last round of reductions we are hoping they can do it again. They may need all of our support. We will keep you informed.
